Was sind "Do It Yourself Fergusons"? "Do It Yourself Fergusons" ist mein zweites Stück in Richtung Konzeptkunst. Das erste Stück "Kunst für Menschen in Not" ist einigen von Ihnen schon bekannt. In der Konzeptkunst hat das Konzept oder die Idee Vorrang vor dem Material oder dem Gegenstand. Marcel Duchamp im frühen 20. Jahrhundert schaffte mit seinen so genannten "Readymades" die Grundlage für Konzeptkunst. Seit den sechziger Jahren ist Konzeptkunst von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern wie Joseph Beuys, Gilbert und George, Yves Klein, Yoko Ono und Sol LeWitt zu einer akzeptierten Kunstrichtung und Arbeitsmethode geworden. In "Kunst für Menschen in Not" sowie in diesem neuen Werk "Do It Yourself Fergusons" ist der Gegenstand nicht das Endprodukt, sondern ein Schritt in einem Prozess, der die Betrachter zu einer Handlung führt. Bei "Kunst für Menschen in Not" ist diese Handlung eine wohltätige. In "Do It Yourself Fergusons" ist die Handlung eine künstlerische Zusammenarbeit. "Do It Yourself Fergusons" ist eine unbegrenzte, nummerierte und von mir signierte Serie von leeren Malmedien. Auflage Nr. 1 enthält die Serie Nr. 1 bis 50. Wenn die ersten 50 Stück verkauft sind, dann werde ich weitere Auflagen machen. Mit diesem Konzeptkunstwerk werden wir zusammen unsere eigene Kunstwelt und unseren eigenen Kunstmarkt mit dem Internet als Trägermedium aufbauen. Es wird keine "virtuelle Kunstwelt", sondern eine reale Kunstwelt mit echten Bildern und echten Künstlerinnen und Künstlern. Das Internet als Trägermedium macht es möglich, dieses Werk weltweit zu verbreiten. Als Konzeptkunstwerk ist "Do It Yourself Fergusons" ein einheitliches Werk von einem Künstler, nämlich von mir. Gleichzeitig als Serie ist es eine Zusammenarbeit mit einer weltweiten und unbegrenzten Zahl von Menschen. Am Anfang ist jedes einzelne Stück in der Serie eine weiße Tabula Rasa im Wert von €25,-. Wenn "Do It Yourself Fergusons" so weit verbreitet sind, dass ich jeden Morgen aufstehen und den ganzen Tag damit verbringen müsste, leere Stücke Papier zu unterschreiben, dann steigt der Preis. Und theoretisch auch der Wert von Ihren eigenen "Do It Yourself Fergusons". Wenn dieses Konzeptkunstwerk sich verbreitet und entwickelt, dann können sich ein ganze Reihe von interessanten Szenarios entwickeln. Zum Beispiel, wenn die Nachfrage und deswegen der Preis von unbemalten und unverkauften Nummern in der Serie steigt: Ist dann Ihr eigenes Stück wertvoller als bemaltes oder als unbemaltes? Wenn ein Sammler oder Kunstkritiker entscheidet, das dieses Konzeptkunstwerk interessant ist und segnet „Do It Yourself Fergusons“ in der herkömmlichen Kunstwelt als ein echtes Kunstwerk: heißt das, dass Sie jetzt ein marktfähiger Künstler sind? Weil meine eigene Signatur auf dem Bild steht, bleibt das letzte Wort über das, was erlaubt und nicht erlaubt ist, ausschließlich bei mir. Das heißt zum Beispiel, Inhalt im Bereich Haß, Gewalt oder Pornographie ohne künstlerische Rechtfertigung wird von der Serie und Website gestrichen und mit einer neuen Nummer umgesetzt, ohne jede Entschädigung. Die Entscheidung, was beinhaltet Haß, Gewalt oder Pornographie ohne künstlerische Rechtfertigung, liegt ausschließlich bei mir. Alle möglichen Entwicklungs-Szenarios sind nicht voraussehbar, und Sie kaufen ein oder mehrere Stücke mit der Kenntnis, dass dies ein Konzeptkunstwerk ist und immer ein Work in Progress bleiben wird. Die "Do It Yourself Fergusons" Kunstwelt ist ein Spiegel der herkömmlichen Kunstwelt. Obwohl die Teilnahme für alle offen ist, interessieren mich hier am meisten Menschen, die keine Belastung von Kunstausbildung oder Erfahrung haben und Menschen, die glauben, sie hätten keinerlei Talent oder Verständnis für zeitgenössische Kunst. In der "Do It Yourself Fergusons" Kunstwelt gibt es kein Klassensystem, (noch nicht). In unserer "Do It Yourself Fergusons" Kunstwelt ist Kunst wichtiger als das fertige Kunstobjekt. Für uns gibt es keine gute Kunst oder schlechte Kunst, sondern nur Kunst, und der Hauptzweck ist nicht ein Urteil über den Gegenstand, sondern Freude an der Tat. In unserer "Do It Yourself Fergusons" Kunstwelt gibt es keine Gemeinheit, Konkurrenz oder Ehrgeiz. Das kommt später mit dem Verkauf von bemalten Bildern und durch die Entwicklung unseres "Do It Yourself Fergusons" Kunstmarkt. Die herkömmliche Kunstwelt hat sich in unserer Zeit von vorgeschriebener Technik und Materialien befreit. Fraglich ist, ob diese Kunstwelt sich von seiner eigenen Selbstherrlichkeit befreien könnte. Ich bin Künstler und für mich ist die Kunst wichtig und meine Arbeit hat Wert, aber nicht die Gegenstände, sondern ihre Auswirkung. Meine letzte Frage ist immer, was und wer hat mein Bild, mein Film oder mein Konzeptkunstwerk verändert und verbessert und ist diese Veränderung oder Verbesserung real oder abstrakt und theoretisch? Mit einem Werk wie "Kunst für Menschen in Not" ist die Antwort ganz klar und deutlich. Die Auswirkung für die bedürftigen Menschen, die am Ende des "Kunst für Menschen in Not" Prozesses stehen, ist real und bemerkbar und wird in der Zukunft immer größer. In unsere Kunstwelt von "Do It Yourself Fergusons", Kunst braucht kein Können. Technik braucht Können. Kunst braucht nur Kreativität und Mut. Wenn Sie eine komplizierte Technik wie zum Beispiel Fotorealismus versuchen, dann sind die Probleme vorprogrammiert. Also versuchen sie einfach zu bleiben. Wenn Sie eine Nummer in der "Do It Yourself Fergusons" Serie kaufen und vor diesem leeren Stück Papier sitzen, beobachten Sie ganz genau, was in Ihren Gedanken passiert. Wenn die erste Frage ist: Was soll ich tun? Und Sie finden kein Antwort, holen Sie ein sechs bis neun Jahre altes Kind. Er oder Sie wird sofort wissen, was zu tun ist. Wenn Sie Angst haben, einen Fehler zu machen: Wissen Sie, dass es in der Kunst keinen Fehler gibt. Fehler in der Kunst sind wie Unkraut, ein wunderschöne Pflanze oder Linie oder Farbe, die am falschen Ort wächst. Wenn Sie keine künstlerische Ausbildung oder Talent haben und Sie glauben, dass Sie eine wunderschöne Linie oder Farbe am falschen Ort platzieren werden, dann fangen Sie mit Zufall an. Es gibt nichts zuverlässiger als Zufall. Eines Tages werden sich ein 30 Millionen Euro teurer Picasso und Ihr 25 Euro „Do It Yourself Fergusons“ treffen in einem kleinen Haufen Sternenstaub. Also, die Auswirkung der Kunst ist wichtiger als der fertige Gegenstand, und was man über sich selber bei dem Versuch Kunst zu machen lernt, ist immer wichtiger als das Ergebnis.
What are "Do It Yourself Fergusons"? "Do It Yourself Fergusons" is my second work in the direction of Concept Art. The first work, "Art for People in Need" is already known by some of you. In Concept Art, the concept or idea takes precedence over the material or the object. In the early 20th century Marcel Duchamp laid the groundwork for Concept Art with his so called "Readymades". Since the 1960's through the work of artists such as Gilbert and George, Yves Klein, Yoko Ono and Sol LeWitt, Concept Art has become an accepted art form and work method. In "Art for People in Need" as in this new work "Do It Yourself Fergusons" the object is not the end product but rather one step in a process that leads the viewer to take concrete action. In "Art for People in Need" this action is charitable. In "Do It Yourself Fergusons" it is an artistic partnership. "Do It Yourself Fergusons" is an unlimited, numbered series of unpainted paper with my signature. Edition Nr. 1 contains series Nr. 1 through 50. When the first 50 pieces are sold, I will publish the next edition of 50 pieces. With this Concept Art Work we will together build our own art world and art market using the internet as a platform. This is not a "virtual" art world but rather a real art world with real pictures and real artists. The internet platform makes it possible to spread the work worldwide. As a Concept Art Work "Do It Yourself Fergusons" is a single work by one artist, namely me. At the same time, as a series, it is a cooperation and partnership with a world wide and unlimited number of people. In the beginning every piece in the series is a white Tabula Rasa worth €25,-. When "Do It Yourself Fergusons" becomes so popular that I must get up every morning and spend the whole day signing empty sheets of paper, then the price will be raised. In this case the value of your own "Do It Yourself Fergusons" theoretically will also increase. If this Concept Piece catches on and develops, then a whole series of interesting scenarios could be foreseen. For example; if the demand for and therefore the price of unpainted numbers in the series rises, are your own "Do It Yourself Fergusons" worth more painted or unpainted? If an art collector or art critic decides that this Concept Piece is interesting and recognizes it as a legitimate artwork in the conventional art world: does this mean that you are now a marketable artist? Because my own signature appears on the picture, the last word about what is allowed and not allowed in terms of content remains exclusively with me. That means for instance, content in the area of hate, violence or pornography without artistic justification will be stricken from the series and the website an replaced by a new number without the possibility of compensation. The decision about what exactly constitutes hate, violence or pornography without artistic justification lies exclusively with me. All possible development scenarios are not predictable and you understand that you are buying one or more numbers in the series with the knowledge that this is a "work in progress" and it will remain so. The "Do It Yourself Fergusons" art world is a mirror on the conventional art world. Although participation is open for everyone, I am especially interested in people who are not burdened by an "art education", have no art experience and believe that they have little or no talent or understanding of modern art. In the "Do It Yourself Fergusons" art world there is no class system (not yet). In our "Do It Yourself Fergusons" art world, art is more important than the art object. For us there is no good art or bad art, there is only art. The main goal is not to judge the object but rather to take pleasure in the act of creating it. In our "Do It Yourself Fergusons" art world there is no meanness, competitiveness, or ambition. That will come later with the selling of the work and the development of a "Do It Yourself Fergusons" art market. The conventional art world has freed itself from prescribed techniques and material. It is however questionable whether this art world can free itself from its own self importance. I am an artist and for me art is important and my work has value. For me the value lies not in the object but rather in its effect. My last question is always: what has my painting, my film or my concept work changed in the world or made better, and is this change or betterment real or abstract and theoretical? With a work such as "Art for People in Need" the answer is clear. The effect on the people helped by this charitable project/process is real and concrete. In our "Do It Yourself Fergusons" art world, art needs no particular skill. Technique needs skill. Art needs creativity and courage. If for instance, you want to use a difficult technique such as "Photorealism" then the problems are built in. Keep it simple. If you buy a "Do It Yourself Ferguson" and find yourself sitting in front of this blank sheet of paper, observe closely what takes place in your mind. If the first question that comes to mind is: what should I do, and you can't find an answer, look for a six to nine year old child. He or she will know exactly what to do. If you are afraid that you will make a mistake, you should know that in art there are no mistakes. Mistakes in art are like weeds, a beautiful plant or line or colour that is growing in the wrong place. If you have no artistic training and you are afraid that you will place a beautiful line or colour in the wrong place, than begin with chance, accident, serendipity. There is nothing more reliable than chance. One day your 25 Euro "Do It Yourself Ferguson" will meet a 30 million Euro Picasso in a little pile of star dust anyway. So....the effect of art is more important than the object and what one learns about oneself in creating the object is more important than the object created.
